There was, in fact, an earthquake that hit the western part of Haiti (near the town of Saint-Marc) on September 23rd, 1887 (Marina dies on the 22nd of September, also near Saint-Marc). By the placement of Saint-Marc (right on the water), it’s not unreasonable to suppose there were also large waves, destruction of property, and so forth. I should add that I’ve long been fascinated by Haiti, and horrified by the corruption its people have endured. While I hadn’t originally planned on Marina dying there, it seems appropriate that some of the happiest and saddest events in her parents’ lives take place on this beautiful and terrible island.
About the Author
Molly Demeter Sokolow Hayden (or Modemeter, for obvious reasons of length) grew up surrounded by her father’s comic book collection, sometimes literally. She fell in love with Will Eisner’s Spirit at an inappropriately young age and wishes she could draw like Jaime Hernandez. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, her daughter, and her cat, and sneaks down to her drawing table whenever she can.
